AMAAL: BLACK DOVE EP

I love when I shuffle my music and I get hit with a sound that I haven’t heard in years.

The Somali-Canadian singer Amaal first captured me in 2019 with her EP Black Dove. Everything about it was so simplistic and delicate. The way her vocals float around the easy rnd/pop vibe of the music is something that we’re seeing a lot now - she was definitely an artist before her time and was one of the walkers, so others could run.

The EP opens with Let Go, which is such a delight. A really floalty, sway in your living room vibe sound that allows your senses to go away with it and as the song says “you should let go”.

While we started with what sounds like a love song, as the EP progresses we go through the heartbreak/realisation portion and land one of my favourite songs Later. Now that I’m listening to this back I can imagine Ariana singing this (teehee interesting). This isn’t said to take away from either artist - just to point out similarities as artists do crossover. Coming & Going is also a very juicy song and another of my faves. I just enjoy how Amaal is just straight to the point in her vocals and also the music, which makes this EP such an easy listen.

This may not be everyones cup of tea, but I throughly enjoy music that sounds like to you can put together an easy dance routine with your friends - it’s just that super girlie vibe, that is needed sometimes. I call it rnb lite. It’s cute and necessary.
